Science song of the week (10/27/2017)

This week’s science song is a true jewel within the geek rock genre and will get you in the mood for any upcoming Halloween event! Jonathan Coulton is a singer-songwriter that relates incredibly well to the, as we scientists like to think, widely popular science cult (also known as geek culture). So, here is to our love for brains! If you happen to be in a neuroscience lab on Tuesday, you may hear some scientist whistling this song through the hallways of the lab. And if you stay until it’s dark (…)

YOUR BRAINS

Heya Tom, it’s Bob from the office down the hall
Good to see you buddy, how’ve you been?
Things have been OK for me, except that I’m a zombie now
I really wish you’d let us in
I think I speak for all of us when I say I understand
Why you folks might hesitate to submit to our demand
But here’s an FYI: you’re all gonna die screaming!

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable; I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here–maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains!

I don’t want to nitpick, Tom, but is this really your plan?
To spend your whole life locked inside a mall?
Maybe that’s OK for now, but someday you’ll be out of food and guns
And then you’ll have to make the call
I’m not surprised to see you haven’t thought it through enough
You never had the head for all that bigger-picture stuff
But Tom, that’s what I do, and I plan on eating you slowly!

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable; I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here–maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains!

I’d like to help you, Tom, in any way I can
I sure appreciate the way you’re working with me
I’m not a monster, Tom, well, technically I am
I guess I am…

I’ve got another meeting, Tom–maybe we could wrap it up?
I know we’ll get to common ground somehow
Meanwhile, I’ll report back to my colleagues, who were chewing on the doors
I guess we’ll table this for now
I’m glad to see you take constructive criticism well
Thank you for your time, I know we’re all busy as hell
And we’ll put this thing to bed, when I bash your head open!

All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable; I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here–maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains!

Science song of the week (10/06/2017)

This week’s science song is by Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown, two science enthusiasts producing a great number of easily understandable and FUN! science content on Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brow’s YouTube Channel. This specific song is called SCIENCE WARS and shows how the different branches of science tend to compete with each other. When you’re working as a scientist you will encounter several people on your way from different fields of science. Sometimes they will act or communicate in a way that shows superiority, but you must not forget – in order to succeed, we need all fields working together and uniting the knowledge! In neuroscience we need physics and programming (which has its roots in mathematics) to give us a working MRI and powerful laptops and softwares to analyze the data, biology and anatomy to understand what we see on our screens when we are looking at brain function, but also social skills and psychology to work together with the participants. There is a huge gain in different areas working together and this is also the final message of this song, check it out below:

LYRICS

Welcome to Science WARS!
Chemistry-Bio-Physics_Mathematical
But which field is best?

PHYSICY

I understand the force and energy
Quantum mechanics and relativity
My field is pure and they rely on me
I see the universe like nobody
You may have made fun of me in high school
For being awkward and following the rules
Now I’ve got laser (WOW, That’s really cool)
May the mass times acceleration be you
Atoms-Entropy-Dark Matter-String Theory

CHEMISTRY

If you want to feel a bond
Then I can give you a good reaction
The elements that make up life
Are my essence, are my satisfaction
All the other fields out there are so basic
Yeah, I’m the central science
Keep your eye on me
I’ll get you charged
If you need me, call me up on Avogadro’s Number
If you leave me, take a titrant
Shove it up your acid buffer
Dopamine and serotonin
Will keep you good and happy
So get your flask and your glass all set up
Neural pattern like a spider
And begin to understand the world!

BIO

Within me you’ll find life’s beauty
In genetics and ecology
Symbiosis and not division
Unless it’s mitosis or the study of fission
Even if you don’t pass, at least you’ll enjoy my class!
Evolution, has brung us along
All species singing one song

MATH

If you want to learn about the world I must say
I am the purest field of study you can take
Immune to misinterpretation
The blueprint of creation
The backbone of all things science
No bias, just constant augmentation
In your mind, and observation
No gadgets, just your logic and your time
And PIE

Together we will find the answers to life!

Brain song of the week (09/25/2017)

We will start this series with a song that may sound all too familiar to many of our fellow neuroscientists: Off her third studio album IRM by Charlotte Gainsbourg (written and produced by Beck) is a deserving first featured song as it is implementing MRI-scanner sounds all through the song.

IRM

(Lyrics)

Take a picture, what’s inside?
Ghost image in my mind
Neural pattern like a spider
Capillary to the centre

Hold still and press the button
Looking through a glass onion
Following the X-ray eye
From the cortex to medulla

Analyze EKG
Can you see a memory?
Register all my fear
On a flowchart disappear

Leave my head demagnetized
Tell me where the trauma lies
In the scan of pathogen
Or the shadow of my sin
